Hanson's Household BookRef 3-365
John Hanson kept a manuscript household or family book.

This passed to his son John, and, eventually with the Spencer-Stanhope (of Cannon Hall) collection to the British Library in 2007.

It is a rare example of a provincial anthology and contains copies of two previously lost ballads describing Queen Elizabeth I's procession through London after the defeat of the Armada in 1588, and other verse by courtly writers.

Also the earliest known copy of a ballad about the 14th century Elland Feud, epitaphs, model legal documents, property records, recipes for inks and fish bait, and instructions for catching birds and rabbits

History of the Family of Stansfeld of StansfieldRef 3-134
John Stansfeld

The story of the Stansfeld / Stansfield family dedicated to Colonel Robert Stansfeld

History of the Family
of
Stansfeld of Stansfield
in the
Parish of Halifax
and its numerous branches

John Stansfeld was well respected as a researcher, and delved into other matters as well as the Stansfeld family.

This book is carefully researched and well documented. The chapter covering the early family, is entitled

Herald's College Pedigree No.1

and follows the names given in this pedigree, starting with Wyon Maryons. Though using this pedigree as a format, John makes it clear which of the early parts of it he does not believe to be true, which are purely taken from pedigrees, and which can be supported by primary evidence.

When it comes to the entry for William Stansfeld (p.127), said to be the first born son and heir of Thomas Stansfeld, it should be noted that John Stansfeld greatly admired Colonel Stansfeld, who was of the Sowerby branch of the family. John does cover Geoffrey Stansfeld (who was the actual first born son and heir of Thomas) in another chapter (p.314), using another pedigree. From the way he writes, it is not clear if he knew the true descent, but did not which to state it definitively, or that he did not have access to Geoffrey's Inquisition post mortem. In addition to details of the families, the book contains
