Parish Church
In the early Christian period, baptisms, marriages and other
ceremonies took place in the cathedrals.
In the 10th and 11th centuries, the lords of the manors started to
build their own churches for the local people.
Later, each parish had one established church, the parish
church.
In mediæval times, baptism, confirmation, marriage, communion and
burials could only take place at the parish church.
There are now around 16,000 parish churches in Britain
