The Professor was the first novel written by Charlotte Brontë.
Early names for the novel were Lucia and The Master.
She finished the novel on 27th June 1846.
It had 6 rejections by several publishing houses – including Smith, Elder & Company, T. C. Newby, and Henry Colburn. Though Smith, Elder & Company had declined the novel, they were sufficiently encouraging for Charlotte to send them her next book, Jane Eyre.
The early chapters are very similar to those of The wool is rising which Branwell wrote in 1834. Charlotte later planned to rework the story as John Henry.
It was published posthumously in 1857 by Smith, Elder & Company.
