Lord Nelson Inn, Midgley

This Foldout Foldout looks at the history and owners of the Lord Nelson Inn at Midgley, and is based upon information which was kindly contributed by Neil Hubbard

• 1720 A row of 5 houses known as Black Rock were dated 1720 and with the initials of John and Sarah Lockwood

• 1755 Robert Turner built the Black Rock Inn. Robert Turner was living in Black Rock house and working as a tanner

• 9th October 1756 Robert Turner buys the Blue Bell estate on the other side of Chapel Lane – see Blue Bell, Midgley

• October 1766 Robert Turner died

• 1785 William Clay (?) 

• 1797 George Patchett – Innkeeper (Blue Bell Inn?) - bought one of the Blue Bell cottages

• 21st October 1805 The name was changed to the Lord Nelson Inn after the Battle of Trafalgar

• 18?? Edward Wilkinson

• 2nd April 1819 James Greenwood bought the pub and land etc from Edward Wilkinson (shopkeeper) for £395

• 11th May 1820 John Sutcliffe bought from James Greenwood for £200 indenture or loan

• 12th May 1827 John Sutcliffe indenture £50 further loan from James Greenwood

• 1834 Henry Sutcliffe

• 1840 John Walton

• 1842 John Walton

• 1842? John Widdup bought the Lord Nelson Inn. His son, John, was born at Scout Head on 14th November 1842

• 1845 John Widdup

• 1851 John Widdup [58]. The Census records his wife Mary, 2 children and 1 servant

• 13th October 1860 John Widdup died

• 1861 Mrs Mary Widdup [58]

• 2nd June 1866 John Widdup bought the Lord Nelson for £300 from Mary Sutcliffe. He borrowed £240 on indenture from William Foster

• 1871 Recorded as Empty at the Census

• 1874, 1881 William Walker [66]. The Census records his Wife and son

• 18?? John Thomas

• 1891 John Sutcliffe [48]

• 1893 John Sutcliffe

• 1894 Joseph Varley

• 1897 John Sutcliffe

• 8th August 1899 Richard Whitaker & Sons Limited bought the Inn from John Edward Thomas

• 9th March 1901 5-year-old Walter Bailey is recorded as having died here

• 1901 Benson Bailey [46]. The Census records 6 surviving children

• 1905 Benson Bailey

• 1908 Mary Meadowcroft

• 1917 John Ingham

• 22nd December 1925 Edward Ross owned by Richard Whitaker & Sons – redemption of land tax

• 27th December 1932 Closed as an Inn

• 2nd May 1933 Herbert Clayton bought 26a (now gone) and 26 from Richard Whitaker and Sons

• 19?? John Crabtree

• 28th October 1969 David Simm bought 26 from John Crabtree for £2250

• 1999 Bill Johnson owned the property for approximately 4 years

• 21st July 2003 Neil & Rosemary Hubbard bought the property from William & Ann Johnson
