The Band

The Brighouse and Rastrick Temperance Brass Band was formed in 1881. The band took its present name – the Brighouse & Rastrick Band – in 1929.

The band is supported by public subscriptions and by its own fund raising efforts.

The band has won many trophies including the September Belle Vue championship in 1929, 1932, 1933, 1934, 1936. About 1950, the name of this contest was changed to the British Open championship, which the Band won in 1978.

It is said that, returning to Brighouse one night after winning a trophy, they removed their shoes as they marched into town, so as not to wake the people of the town, and played See the Conquering Hero Comes as they marched.

They won the National Brass Band Champions of Great Britain Trophy several times: 1946, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1980, 1997, 1998, 2010.

In 1968, they won the first World Championship.

In 1977, the band entered the UK pop music charts with their version of The Floral Dance – arranged by Derek Broadbent – and reached Number 2, where they remained for 9 weeks. They received Gold and Silver discs for the recording.

In 1993, they were the first Yorkshire band to win the All England Masters Brass Band Championship.

In 1998, they held three championship titles: the All England Masters Championships, the National Championship of Great Britain, and the European Championship at contests held in Holland. They are only band to have held these three titles at the same time.

Their rehearsal rooms have been in several locations, including the Oddfellows' Hall, Brighouse and Rydings Hall, Brighouse [1970s].

In October 2010, 27 year-old Laura Hirst, became the first female player to hold a permanent position in the Band
