Soldier's Memorial Hymn

Poem by

Levi Haigh

Assembled in Thy house, O God, to-day,
   To honour both the living and the dead,
We lift our hearts to praise Thee, and to pray
   Thy blessing on what here is done and said.

We think of those, who left us young and strong,
   To fight our battles on a foreign shore,
Doing, with patience, duties hard and long,
   Some welcomed home, but others come no more.

Known warriors they, though some in unknown graves,
   Now rest asleep beneath a foreign sky:
There 'neath the sod, and yonder 'neath the waves;
   But, where and how, they unforgotten lie.

We fain would hope they died to live again,
   Where nevermore shall strife disturb their peace;
But, free from death, from sorrow, toil and pain,
   All that is best for them will e'er increase.

As this memorial we unveil, to-day,
   To Thy own glory and their memory,
We thus to them our humble tribute pay,
   And praise Thee, Lord, for granting victory.

Bless Britain, Lord, our own beloved land,
   Bless too our King and guide him evermore,
Direct his counsellors and, by Thy hand,
   Bring peace to us and every foreign shore.

We think of hearts, bereft of those most dear
   Whose sorrow Thou and they alone can know:
Look down, in love, to comfort and to cheer,
   To guide and bless, as on through life, they go.

We glorify Thee, worship and adore,
   Jehovah-God, the blessed trinity
O let Thy benediction, we implore,
   Rest now upon us and eternally.
