An Acrostic – Sowerby Bridge

Poem by

Levi Haigh

Silence is richer far than speech
When wisdom fails our lips to teach.
Onward our motto e'er should be
And all our deeds with it agree.
Wisdom seeks all her gifts to spend,
To reach the best and noblest end.
Equity, while favouring- none
Serves justice out to every one.
Religion claims our best, yet gives
To us far more than it receives.
Beauty becomes a treasure true
Which gives us pleasures ever new.
Yesterday gone and waitest thou
To-morrow's dawn? be wise – live now!

Benevolence, with willing mind,
Does worthy deeds of every kind.
Righteousness seeks to ever be
   True with a holy purity.
Innocence through good and ill,
   Simple and true continues still.
Duty, wherever it may be,
   Performs its task most willingly.
Godliness God's laws must keep,
Though, often, it may have to weep.
Esteem for self, is good and wise,
But self conceit we all despise.
