Mr Ainley was principal of the firm of John Ainley & Sons,

Town Council as a representative of the Longwood Ward.
He was in politics a Conservative.
For several years he served on the committee of the Mrs
Sunderland Musical Competitions and was actively interested in a
number of musical societies.

The Halifax Courier [30th October 1880] reported
This was seen to be a rigged vote for the appointment,
and Ainley was reappointed
An article in The Homœpathic World [1st December 1880]
indicates that Dr Ainley he was a proponent of
homœpathy, and that he was ousted by
in favour of Dr Cookson when the Sanitary Committee was
choosing a Medical Officer of Health for Halifax.
In 1893, he devoted all his time to public work.
He was involved in a local fever hospital.
In April 1900, he gave evidence to the Royal Commission on
Vaccination about the smallpox outbreak in Halifax.
