Families |
From the 16th century, the Armytage family were prominent in
Clifton and Brighouse, and held considerable amounts of land and
property in the district.
From 1564, they lived on the Kirklees Estate.
The family held the Baronetcy of Kirklees, and even though the
original line died out in 1737, the baronetcy was re-created and
still exists today.
The names John and George were extremely popular in the
family and are found in virtually every generation.
This can lead to considerable confusion for the unwary.
The members of the family discussed here are those descended from
William Armytage.
The family owned much land in and around Brighouse.
In 1816, about 100 acres in the centre of the town was sold for
development.
