He was one of the first men to go from the town. He went to the Dardanelles and was wounded on 8th May 1915.

He went to France in February 1917.

He was killed in action [6th September 1917], during an attack on German positions.

The Todmorden & District News [28th September 1917] published an account of his death, and his photograph appeared in the edition of 5th October 1917.

He was buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium [Grave Ref VIII A 17].

On Sunday, 3rd July 1898, the bodies of Leah and 14-month-old son Nathaniel were found floating in the canal near Edwards Canal Mills, Sowerby Bridge. Her behaviour had changed following an incident 4 years earlier, in which she had been hit on the head during a quarrel with her sister. On the night of her suicide, she had been upset when her husband complained that she had not mended his clothes, and she ran off with the child.

At the Inquest, a verdict of suicide was returned

He was a member of Tuel Lane UMC Brotherhood / educated at Tuel Lane Council School / a letterpress printer's apprentice [1911] / in business with his father as a printer/compositor at Town Hall  Street, Sowerby Bridge / gaining experience in the London printing trade [around 1912].

During World War I, he enlisted [early 1916] and served as a Private with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), and was wounded in Flanders.

He died from his wounds in the South African General Hospital, France, [5th November 1918], 5 days before the end of the war.

The family received news of his death on the day the armistice was signed.

The Halifax Courier [16th November 1918] reported his death and published messages from his family and Clara of Mill Bank.

He was buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref V A 52].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Saint George's Church, Sowerby

In 1841, he was a prisoner in the House of Correction, Wakefield.

In 1842, he, Henry Jagger & Thomas Bertram were charged with stealing a quantity of cloth from the pews at Coley Chapel. They were all found guilty and sentence to 1 months' imprisonment.

In April 1843, he and Jagger were charged with assault on John Stirzaker.

Both were transported for life.

They left England aboard the Blundell on 13th March 1844, and arrived at Van Diemen's Land on 12th July 1844.

On 7th September 1850 and 4th September 1854, Akroyd is shown employed by Thomas Johnson at Broad Marsh, Australia

In 1881, he employed his 3 sons who were all letterpress printers.

He was in partnership with Fred Lumb [1882].

He published the Sowerby Bridge Chronicle [from 1883] and became sole proprietor shortly afterwards.

He was a strong supporter of Free Libraries and an advocate for a Free Library in Sowerby Bridge. In 1887, he suggested a Public Library for Sowerby Bridge.

He was an officer in the Ryburn Lodge of Freemasons.

In 1861, he married Sarah Ellen Brearley [1840-1903].
