a cotton piecer [1901], a cotton spinning mule piecer [1911], and employed by W. & R. K. Lee Limited.

During World War I, he enlisted immediately after War broke out [October 1914] and served as a Corporal with the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was in the Dardanelles, Egypt, and France.

He was killed in action on the Somme [30th September 1916].

He was buried at Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, France [Grave Ref IX J 17].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Saint George's Church, Sowerby, and on the W. & R. K. Lee Limited Roll of Honour

He was killed at Brakenlaagte, Transvaal [30th October 1901] (aged 25)  when they were cut off by the Boers as they were relieving Colonel Benson's column.

He is remembered on the Halifax Parish Church South African War Memorial, and on West View Park War Memorial

The principal entrance to Birks Hall bears the monogram of Mrs GottM A G – suggesting that she altered and rebuilt the house.

He was educated at Hipperholme Grammar school / Chairman of Joseph Brooke Limited / MD of the Nonslip Stone Company / a stone, granite & brick merchant & manufacturer [1911] / director and a founder of the Leeds Fireclay Company Limited / director of the Brighouse Brick, Tile & Stone Company Limited / a member of the St John [No 1736] Masonic Lodge / an Alderman.

In 1903, he succeeded his brother Willie as head of Joseph Brooke Limited.

In March 1890, Miss Hannah Haley of Northowram claimed £2,000 damages for breach of promise from him. By mutual consent, a verdict was returned for Miss Haley for £700.

On 16th September 1897, he married Edith Sutcliffe.


Edith was the youngest daughter of William Sutcliffe of Ingfield House, Odsal, Bradford
