He was a dyer's apprentice [1911].

During World War I, he served as a Lieutenant (Acting Captain)  with the West Riding Regiment.

He was awarded the Military Cross [1917] for


distinguished service in the field at the Battle of Ypres, which took place amid dreadful climatic conditions, floundering, wading and hauling each other along, amidst bursting shells and a storm of machine guns – the gallant Yorkshiremen went on and won their objective
 

His photograph appears with a report of his award in the Halifax Courier [17th November 1917]

He survived the War.

He died in Huddersfield [Q2 1960] (aged 68)

In [Q4] 1867, he married Sarah Jane Morris [1847-1???] in Halifax.

On 15th January 1870, as Edwin Blakey was walking along Caygill's Walk, Halifax, he was attacked by 3 tall men. One seized him by the throat and another put dirt into his mouth. He was robbed of 8d in copper [coins] and 8 lbs of potatoes before the men made their escape
 

The Halifax Evening Courier [28th September 1889] reported


On 8th March 1889, Edwin Blakey of the Duke of Wellington, Halifax was fined for having his house open during prohibited hours

He was a greengrocer / a boot & shoe maker [1851] / landlord of the Peacock, Todmorden [1860s] / a fish merchant [1870] / a gas lamplighter [1881].

He married (1) Mary Ann Dawson [18??-1869].


Mary Ann was born in Walsden, the daughter of Nancy & Michael Dawson, a green grocer

He was a grocer's assistant [1911] / employed in the grocery department of the Halifax Industrial Society at Weymouth Street.

He had a sweetheart, Miss Walters, of 200 Siddal Lane.

During World War I, he enlisted [September 1914] and served as a Private with the 2nd/4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was reported missing and assumed to have died (somewhere in France) [3rd May 1917] (aged 26).

He is remembered on the Arras Memorial, France [Grave Ref 6], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Pellon Baptist Church, and on the Memorial at Rhodes Street Wesleyan Chapel

On 14th October 1844, he married Ellen Patchett Alderson [1825-1896] at Halifax Parish Church.

Charlotte Sarah, of 35 Savile Mount, was born in Southowram / Hipperholme, the daughter of John Robinson

In 1851, Jane married Thomas Edleston.

By 1871, Jane was a widow and running a school at Salterhebble.

By 1891, Jane was living on her own means, with daughter Mary Ann Edleston, and son Alfred Blakey Edleston (a clerk in Holy Orders), at 20 Piccadilly, Burnley, and her sister Ann Blakey

When he died [aged 13], his pupils erected a stone at Lister Lane Cemetery

 

William died 3rd September 1863 (aged 53).

Harriet died 16th January 1871 (aged 57).
