The Leeds Times [Saturday 6th April 1844] reported
The flue was not drawing so well, so, in order to make it do so, she
resolved to try the following experiment.
She fetched two pounds of powder out of the cellar (her husband being
a sinker having always a quantity on hand for blasting) and took part
of it and put it under the pan.
As soon as she did this, it ignited and the pan was blown up and
sparks ignited the rest of the powder which was upon the table in a
basin.
This blew up the chamber boards, knocked out several windows and
window pillars, and scorched the woman and her daughter who were in
the house when the explosion took place, very severely
