He was educated at Halifax Secondary School / a clerk for brassfounders [1911] / employed by Gaukroger, Sykes & Roberts Limited.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the Manchester Regiment, and transferred to the 1st Battalion King's (Liverpool Regiment).

He died of wounds at hospital in Abbeville, France [19th November 1916] (aged 22).

The Halifax Courier [25th November 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref I F 19].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Halifax Secondary School, and on the Memorial at Saint Mary the Virgin, Illingworth
