He was taken prisoner on September 30th 1918 at Le Cateau, suffering
from a bayonet wound.
Along with a Russian comrade, he escaped on the 5th of December, and
made their way to Bonn where they encountered British soldiers

(Dardanelles) in volunteering to attack a redoubt and holding it with
four other men until relieved ten hours later
he had been previously mentioned for gallantry in connection with the
capture of a machine gun belonging to the Turks, and had now had a
second mention for gallantry at the Dardanelles.
It also reminded readers of his DCM for conspicuous bravery in the
fighting in the Dardanelles, holding a trench along with Sergeant
Major Bradshaw Allister, until reinforcements could be hurried up
