On 24th March 1883, he was found in bed and with him was a bottle
which had contained laudanum.
His life could not be saved.
The Inquest heard that he had been in financial difficulties, and had
tried to borrow money
and when this had failed, he bought laudanum and took it after his
wife had left him in bed.
