As they were posing for a photograph, Alfred stumbled and fell headlong down a wall, and was seriously injured. He died at 7:00 pm the following day, having broken his back.

He was buried at St Peter's Church, Sowerby [10th May 1898] Probate records show that he left effects valued at £4,369 12/9d.

Probate was granted to his widow Betsy, John William Hopkinson (cashier), and Thomas Holy (book keeper).

They lived at Bank Top, Southowram.

During World War I, he enlisted with the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), and served as a Private with the 32nd Battalion Royal Fusiliers.

He was killed in action near Ypres [1st August 1917] (aged 30).

He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium, in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on Southowram War Memorial, on the Memorial at Saint Anne's Church, Southowram, on the Memorial at Sion Branch Congregational Sunday School, Bank Top, (possibly) on the Halifax Parish Church Members (WWI) Memorial, and in St Anne's Church, Southowram.

His brother Harry also died in the War.

Selina died 26th December 1969 (aged 81).

He was a member of the Mytholmroyd Church Lads' Brigade / a maker-up in warehouse (cotton spinning) [1911] / a warehouseman with D. J. Crossley & Sons.

He lived with his mother and stepfather at Royal Fold, Mytholmroyd.

During World War I, he served as a Lance Corporal with the 16th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps.

He and his brother Walter were in the same regiment, serving on the Somme. On 4th November 1916, they were having a meal together in a dugout when a shell hit.

Walter was killed [4th November 1916].

Arthur was reported missing action 12th December 1916.

The Halifax Courier [17th February 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref II G 13].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Halifax Parish Church Members (WWI) Memorial, (possibly) on the Memorial at Saint Michael's Church, Mytholmroyd, (possibly) on the Memorial at Mytholmroyd Church Lads' Brigade, and in the book Royd Regeneration.

During World War I, he enlisted at Carlton Barracks, Leeds [5th September 1915] and served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 7th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).

He was injured on the Somme. He was repatriated for hospital treatment and returned to the Front [29th July 1917], and joined the front line on the 8th October.

He died at Passchendaele during the first day of the Battle of Poelcappelle [9th October 1917].

Born at Mount Zion, Illingworth [16th August 1825] (19th August 1825; on his grave); baptised at Illingworth Moor Wesleyan Chapel [18th September 1825].

He was educated at Popples School / an apprentice to the butter trade in Sedbergh / assisting his father in the family butter business, travelling with  him on foot to Keighley and then by coach to Kendal, where they  bought butter from Westmorland and Cumberland / a special constable during the Plug Riots [1842].

He succeeded to his father's business as a butter merchant in Cheapside.

On John Abbott's death in 1870, his property was sold, and Thomas bought the premises where his family had worked for over forty years.

In 1883, Thomas bought the area to the west of his premises, the property being described as

bounded on the south by Cheapside, east by property of Thomas Carter, and west by Commercial Street, lately called New South Street

This included Commercial Street and some of the low level premises built facing the latter street.

Thomas's interest were travel and literature, and for many years he was a well-known judge at local agricultural shows. He travelled to Canada, the USA, & throughout Europe. He was twice shipwrecked on his travels.

He suffered from deafness, which prevented him accepting invitations to enter public life.

He retired [September 1897].

On 3rd September 1859, he married Annie Hedley in Halifax.

There is a window in his memory in Ripponden Church.

Born in Thetford, Norfolk.

He was a coach painter of Queen's Road, Halifax [1896] / a coach painter [1901] / a carriage painter for coach builder [1911].

In 1896, he married Myra Ambler at Halifax Parish Church.


Myra, of Queens Road, Halifax, was born in Halifax, the daughter of
Samuel Ambler

Myra died 25th January 1953 (aged 86).

Born in Salford, Lancashire.

He was a bobbin pegger [1911].

He joined the Navy on account of his asthma [1912].

During World War I, he he served as a First Class Gunner with the Royal Navy.

He served on the battlecruiser HMS Queen Mary which blew up at the Battle of Jutland [31st May-1st June 1916], with the loss of 1,266 of her crew of 1,284.

He died 31st May 1916 (aged 20).

He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, England [Grave Ref 12], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint Mary's Church, Halifax, and on the Memorial at Halifax Bowling Club

He was a fruiterer / greengrocer [1880] / a journeyman teamer [1885, 1887].

On 8th August 1880, he married Jane Snell [1856-1913] at the Independent Chapel, George Street, Huddersfield.


Jane was born in Bradfield, Berkshire [9th February 1855]

He was a member of Rhodes Street Wesleyan Chapel, Sunday School & Boys'  Brigade / a part-timer / worsted doffer [1911] / an apprentice to Woodall Nicholson & Company Limited.

During World War I, he enlisted [March 1917] with the Staffordshire Yeomanry, and served as a Private with the 1st/6th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment.

He was killed at Cambrai [3rd October 1918] (aged 20).

The Halifax Courier [16th November 1918] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref V B 23]. He is remembered on the family grave at Mount Zion Methodist Chapel, Ogden at Grave Ref: E 13, on the Memorial at Rhodes Street Wesleyan Chapel, and in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance
