John Carpmael was the son of Thomas Carpmael of Staffordshire.
John and his family moved from Pudsey to Halifax. The births of their daughters Jane [in Pudsey 1781] and Elisabeth [in Halifax 1783] suggest that the family moved to Halifax around 1782.
He was the Deputy Constable of Halifax [1805] and innkeeper of the Upper George Inn, Halifax.
He married Susanna Lister [1754-1827].

In the early 19th century, as local Constable, he was one a group of men who took it in turns to watch premises at Four Mills which had been burgled several times. When one of the group turned up to relieve Carpmael, Carpmael thought that he was a robber and shot him in the back. The victim was incapacitated for several years and never recovered. Carpmael lost his position as Constable
