On 6th October 1810, Alexander Turner and James King borrowed £7,000 for 1 year from John Edwards of Northowram Hall. The loan was secured as a mortgage against land and property owned by the pair; much of this was at Blackshawhead. By 1824, the loan had not been paid back, and Thomas, Edwards's beneficiary, was pressing for payment. When Turner's daughter Mary, wife of Rev James Armytage Rhodes, inherited the estate, she insisted that her husband pay the debt on her behalf. Rev Rhodes paid back the loan in full – plus interest – out of his own pocket, on the condition that all documentation relating to the matter be destroyed.

Thomas died at Everton, Lancashire [12th August 1843].

Anne died at Wavertree, Lancashire [25th March 1857].

On 14th April 1864, Mary Ann killed the 2 children – Mary (aged 2 years & 7 months) and Archibald (aged 5 months) - by cutting their throats with a razor.

Afterwards, she gave herself up to the village policeman, saying

I have tried to be like others, and I cannot.

I have killed my two children.

I have taken them out of their misery, lock me up.

I loved them.

They are in heaven

Whilst she was detained in prison, she said that she had intended to kill the children and then herself, but having put down the razor to lay the children on the floor, she was horrified and could not pick it up again.

At the inquest on 15th April 1864, the Court heard that she was an affectionate mother, but the family had been in straitened circumstances for some time and she was uneasy in her mind.

Witnesses included William Ambler, PC Bracewell, Lydia Aspinall, and Dr Henry Pritchett

The Coroner's jury returned a verdict of wilful murder.

The jury on her trial at the Leeds Assizes in August were of opinion that she was in an unsound state of mind, and returned a verdict of Not Guilty, and she was ordered to be confined during Her Majesty's Pleasure.

This is discussed in the book Halifax Murders.
