In 1766, he became insolvent and was forced to assign over his

Further, Edwards had Eli imprisoned in York Castle for
debt.
Eli's son, Daniel temporarily saved the situation by
eloping with Edwards's only daughter, Sarah, and
marrying her in Scotland.

He was Astronomer Royal for Scotland 1906-10 and Professor of
Practical Astronomy at Edinburgh University.
On 10th September 1910, he was appointed 9th Astronomer Royal for
England and held the post until 1933.
He was Fellow and Vice-President of the Royal Society and President
of the British Astronomical Association [1916-1918].
He was knighted for his observations of stars near the Sun,
supporting Einstein's prediction of the bending of light in a
gravitational field [1919].
He was made a KBE [1926].
He introduced the public broadcasting of time signals by the
BBC on radio [1924].
He died aboard ship whilst travelling from Australia to England, and
is buried at sea.
