In April 1857, he was charged by Sarah Elizabeth Kitchin [aged 22] on 2 charges:

He had paid his addresses to her between 6 and 7 years, made promises of marriage, seduced her from the path of virtue, and a child, born in March 1857, was the result.

He had earlier induced her to meet him near Holdsworth's Mill, Halifax with a view to killing the unborn child.

She clung so tightly to him that he could not shake her off. She threatened to inform of him, but her begged her not to do so, and again promised to marry her and give her some houses after confinement. He put 20 sovereigns into her hand, a gold chain round her neck, and a gold watch in her bosom. He wrote several love letters to her and asked to meet her on the following Sunday, even though, at the time of writing them, he was

united in matrimony at the register office to another female

He was ordered to pay £3 4/6d for expenses and 2/6d per week afterwards for the support of the child.

On the morning of 6th December 1864, Eliza was on her way to work when she met Drake and they went for a walk along the canal at Caddy Field.

He threw Eliza into the canal and ran off when others saw her struggling in the water. She was eventually rescued by John Furness, a stone cutter, who had been working nearby.

Drake threw himself into the canal but was rescued by 2 men.

He was charged with attempted murder at the Magistrates' Court and ordered to stand trial at the Winter Assizes.

At the Leeds Assizes on 23rd December 1864, he was found guilty of attempted murder, and was sentenced to 15 years' penal servitude

In 1877, he married Hannah Wilcock [1852-1889] in Halifax.

He was a boiler coverer and travelled around England with his work / a boiler and steam pipe coverer (for ship builders), boarding in  Birkenhead [1911].

He lived at 18 Colin Street, Hanson Lane, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [Whitsuntide 1915] and served as a Private with the 22nd Battalion Manchester Regiment.

He died 14th March 1917 (aged 28).

The Halifax Courier [5th May 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Gommecourt British Cemetery No.2, Heburterne, France [Grave Ref V H 29].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

He was buried at St. Sever Cemetery, France [Grave Ref A 4 1].

He is remembered on Elland War Memorial, on the Memorial at Blackley Particular Baptist Church, and on the Memorial at Saint Andrew's Church, Stainland.

His brother-in-law Jonathan Turner also died in the War

He was a member of the Christian Endeavour Society / a member of Sowerby Bridge Primitive Methodist Chapel / a porter for the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway [1911] / a billiard marker at the Jubilee Café, Sowerby Bridge [1914].

He lived at 6 Victoria Road, Sowerby Bridge [1914].

During World War I, he enlisted [6th August 1914], and served with B Battery 95th Brigade Royal Horse Artillery & Royal Field Artillery.

He was promoted to Sergeant after the Battle of the Somme, for


saving a gun when the rest of the team had been killed
 

He was killed in action [5th April 1918].

He was buried at Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, France [Grave Ref II C 2].

After his death, his mother wrote to the Army asking for any of Walter's personal effects; she got the reply:


No effects were recovered from his person or kit, owing to the fact that the man was struck by a shell which damaged his body to such an extent that things could not be found

William died 22nd June 1873 (aged 57).

Sybil took over at the Manor House [1874, 1881].

She died 8th May 1898 (aged 75).

Lower Place Farm, Southowram.

On 8th December 1913, he was walking behind his horse – a heavy draught horse, about 6 years old – as they passed along Skew Road, beneath the railway bridge at Hipperholme. Two express trains passed and the horse took fright at the noise and knocked William down. It is possible that he was run over by the cart,

He was taken to Halifax Infirmary with a compound fracture of the left thigh. On 12th December 1913, Dr K. Douglas Faulkner operated to save the leg, but William died of shock on 14th December
