Henry Edmunds

[1823-1904]

Henry Edmunds was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

He was an ironmonger / iron merchant at Halifax / a partner in Roper & Edmunds [1854] / a partner in Edmunds & Hookway [1868].

On 26th July 1849, he married (1) Caroline Hatton [1823-1853] at St Paul's Church, Islington.

In 1852, they moved to Halifax.

Children:

1. Henry

Caroline died in childbirth [26th May 1953].

On 1st June 1854, he married (2) Sarah Hannah Walker at Stainland Wesleyan Chapel.

Children:

2. Alice Mary [b 1856] who married [September 1879]  Alfred S. Milnes of Stoke Newington at South Parade  Chapel
3. Edith Milnes [b 1858]

The family lived at

• 14 Barum Top, Halifax [1861]
• South Place, Stafford Road [1867]
• South Field, Stafford Road [1871]
• 3 Park Road, Halifax / 3 Park Villas, Halifax [1881]

He was active in local affairs.

• In November 1862, he unsuccessfully opposed Adam Battinson as Councillor for Market Ward, Halifax, losing by 184 votes to 84
• In 1867, he was elected to represent Skircoat Ward. He retired in 1868
• He was a Methodist preacher [1861, 1871]. In 1870, he was Treasurer of a local Wesleyan Methodist group
• In 1878, he presided over meetings of the Halifax Auxiliary of the British & Foreign Bible Society
• He was an Overseer of the Poor at Halifax

In 1879, he was a shareholder in John Bagnall & Sons Limited of Birmingham.

Henry, Sarah & other members of the family were buried at Stoney Royd Cemetery
