An extensive article entitled The Fighting on the Indian
Frontier – a letter from a Walsden man, which
mentions Thomas and his account of campaign in the Malakand
Pass and the Swat river engagements in India.
Thomas died at Chitral, India [4th July 1895] (aged 21).
The Todmorden & District News [2nd August 1895] reported his death
Furness took part in three engagements in the
Chitral Expedition,
thereby earning a medal and two bars.
His regiment, the 2nd Battalion
King's Own Scottish Borderers,
was well to the front throughout.
He was a young man of splendid physique and excellent promise.
He joined the army three years ago, and in September last was over on
furlough;
as soon as he returned to his regiment at York he volunteered to go
out to India.
The news of his death lacks confirmation from the War Office, and we
would fain hope that it may prove to be incorrect, though we have no
grounds whatever for doubting it
