During World War I, he served as a Private / Guardsman with the 2nd Battalion Scots Guards.

He was killed in action [17th October 1915] (aged 20); (some reports say the 19th).

The Halifax Courier [30th October 1915] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Lillers Communal Cemetery, France [Grave Ref IV D 3].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Memorial at All Saints' Church, Dudwell

He is remembered on All Saints' War Memorial, Dudwell

On Saturday 23rd October 1915, the family received news of George's death.

2 days later, his father James, who had been unwell for some time, died, his death possibly hastened by the news of his son
