He was educated at Ladyroyd School, Walshaw.

At the age of 15, he joined his uncles' firm, Mitchell Brothers at Old Town Mill.

He eventually became a manager, then a partner.

In 1930, he retired, but rejoined the business – then run by Mitchell Brothers (Old Town) Limited – in 1932. He remained as manager until he finally retired in 1945.

He was known as Young Ab.

He never married.

He was the last of the Gibsons of Greenwood Lee.

He lived at Greenwood Lee throughout his life.

He and his cousin Constance Calverley, inherited the Mitchell family estate – including the Boston Hill estate – in Wadsworth.

He took great care of Gibson Mill and the Gibson estates, and in his will, he asked that Hardcastle Crags remain a place of recreation and with Greenwood Lee, should pass into the care of the National Trust. However, since he left no money for the upkeep, the National Trust declined his offer of Greenwood Lee but accepted Hardcastle Crags.

He bequeathed £10,000 to Heptonstall Parish Church for the Abraham & Mary Elizabeth Gibson Memorial, in memory of his parents. The income from half of this was to insure against loss and damage by fire and storm, and for repairing and maintaining the Church. One-quarter was to be used for the old Church The Church also received proceeds from the sale of Greenwood Lee

Born in Hebden Bridge [17th April 1897].

He was a scholar at Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge / a presser of ready-made clothes [1911] / employed by Holt & Sutcliffe.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 22nd Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps.

He was engaged at the 2nd Birmingham War Hospital for some time before going to France [4th February 1917]. He wrote letters home saying that he was going up to the line but that he would be all right. Another letter told how he was one of a party of 9 men, carrying rations up to the line, and he escaped with his life, though 6 of the group were killed.

He was killed in action 3 days later [27th October 1917] (aged 20).

The Halifax Courier [3rd November 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium, and on the Memorial at Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge

He was educated at Rishworth Grammar School and Manchester University [1903]. He taught mathematics at Salford Technical Institute and became assistant lecturer in engineering and hydraulics at Manchester. In 1927, he supervised the construction of a scale model of the Severn Estuary in order to determine the effects of introducing a tidal barrage.

He published many books and papers on engineering.

On 26th July 1905, he married Amy Quarmby at St Bartholomew's, Meltham.

He was described as a man of genius and deranged.

He returned to Brighouse where he died

an alcoholic aggravated by brandy

at the age of 39 [16th February 1753].

He was buried at Halifax Parish Church.

The Slead Hall estate passed to his sister, Elizabeth.

There were old family differences which led to ill-feeling between William and Enoch.


In November 1843, as William was returning from the well with a can of water, he met Enoch and another person, and William called out that Enoch

was the greatest liar in Halifax

and

not a word he uttered could be believed

and demanded that the other two should step aside for him.

He threw water over Enoch, and then hit him on the head with the can. The old man fell heavily on the pavement and lay insensible for a time. He died one month later.

After the post mortem, the doctor said that there were bruises on Enoch's head and inflammation of the brain, but he was unable to say whether these were the results of William's blows.

In March 1844, William was charged with manslaughter.

He was acquitted

 

Alice died 5th July 1851 (aged 51), and was buried in the family grave at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 2709] with her father, and remembered on her husband's grave.

William died 19th April 1888 (aged 56).

He & the children were buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 4056] with William's sister Mary Ann Gibson [1788-1864] and with Benjamin Baxendale

Abraham Gibson (2).

After the death of his brother of Abraham Gibson (3) in 1805, the Greenwood Lee & Gibson Mill estate passed to William.

He was a cotton spinner & manufacturer of Heptonstall [1824]

On 22nd December 1824, he married Grace Midgley [1791-1871].


Grace, of Heptonstall, was the daughter of Ambrose Midgley.

She was a farmer [1841] / in receipt of dividends [1871].

  3. William

They lived at

  • New Bridge, Heptonstall [1871]

Grace died 22nd April 1871.

Probate records show that she left effects valued at under £1,500.

Administration was granted to sons Abraham & William

A foreman platelayer at Todmorden.

On 15th September 1881, he was supervising a gang of workers on the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway Company at Gauxholme. As the Todmorden to Manchester express passed, he stepped aside and into the path of the express train from Manchester. He was killed instantly

He was a cotton manufacturer [1861] / a cotton spinner & manufacturer at New Bridge, Heptonstall [1871] / a cotton spinner & manufacturer employing 160 persons [1881] / a cotton spinner & manufacturer [1891] / living on own means [1901].

He married Grace [1839-19??].


Grace was born in Midgley

  • Stoneshey Gate, Heptonstall [1901, 1903]

William died 17th March 1903.

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £10,105 18/2d.

Probate was granted to his brother Abraham Gibson (gentleman), Gamaliel Sutcliffe, and John Cousin Mitchell

In [Q2] 1867, he married (2) Ruth Sutcliffe [1833-1871] in Halifax Children:

Ruth died (possibly of perinatal complications) [14th January 1871] (aged 38).

In [Q1] 1872, he married (3) Emma Hanson [18??-1894] in Halifax.

William died 14th February 1892 (aged 59).

Emma died 1st July 1894.

Around 1893, he married Annie [1873-19??].


Annie was born in Birmingham
 


William and Annie were Music Hall Artistes in the early 1900s, working under names Sid Ali and Madame Ali / Madame Query

Son of Stott Gibson.

He was a member of St John's Mission Church & School, Hebden Bridge / a football player / a shop assistant (grocer) for Mr Walmsley of Hangingroyd,  Hebden Bridge [1911] / employed in the grocery department of the Heptonstall Co-operative Society.

During World War I, he enlisted [8th February 1916] and served as a Private with the 4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He died of wounds to the back & arm [14th September 1916] (aged 23).

He was buried at Puchevillers British Cemetery, France [Grave Ref IV C 21].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Saint James Church, Hebden Bridge, and on the Memorial at Saint James Church, Hebden Bridge

His brothers Arthur & Ben also died in the War

He was a pupil at Rishworth Charity School [1861] / an engineer's clerk at Canal Mills [1871] / an engineer's commercial clerk [1881] / an engine maker's cashier [1891] / a member of the Sowerby Bridge Prosecution Society [1900] / an auditor of the Sowerby Bridge Constitutional Club [1900] / an auditor of the Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club [1900] / councillor for the Central Ward of Sowerby Bridge District Council  [1900] / an engineer's cashier [1901] / a director secretary (engineers) [1911].

On 1st January 1896, he and W. Worsnup were each presented a marble clock for their work with Christ Church Sunday School, Sowerby Bridge,

On 14th October 1874, he married (1) Jane Hartley [1850-1891] at Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge.


In 1871, Jane was working as a servant to Rev John Ellison

On 21st December 1882, he married Mary Ackroyd at St James's Church, Halifax.


Mary was born in Halifax, the daughter of James Ackroyd
 

They had no children.

He was educated at Rishworth Grammar School.

He died 20th November 1917 (aged 24).
