During World War I, he enlisted [February 1916] and served as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed in action at Arras [2nd May 1917] (aged 26).

The Halifax Courier [26th May 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Brown's Copse Cemetery, France [Grave Ref III D 31].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on the Memorial at Saint George's Church, Lee Mount, and on the Memorial at Crossley's Carpets. His widow was granted a pension of 13/9d a week [from November 1917].

Born in Halifax [1761]; two baptisms are recorded in Halifax for children called Mitchell, on 7th December 1760 (possibly an earlier child who died in infancy) and 6th December 1761 (probably this Mitchell).

He was a card maker [1781, 1782, 1785, 1786, 1789, 1790] / a comb maker [1793] / a card maker [1800, 1802, 1812, 1841].

On 12th August 1781, he married Sarah Rothera [1756-1812] in Halifax.


Mitchell signed for himself when he married, which was unusual for the time, so presumably, he was at least semi-literate

He was killed in action at Passchendaele [25th November 1917] (aged 33).

The Halifax Courier [22nd December 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered at Stoney Royd Cemetery on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium [Grave Ref 4-6 & 162], in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Halifax Parish Church Members (WWI) Memorial

He died of severe head wounds in No.13 General Hospital, Boulogne [27th October 1918] (aged 42).
