He was educated at Halifax Municipal Technical College.

He was a commercial traveller.

During World War II, he served as a Sergeant / Observer with the 236th Squadron Royal Air Force.

In 1942, he was badly burned on his hands and face when the Blenheim / Whitley Bomber in which he was flying during the Battle of Britain crashed on the Welsh Coast. He underwent many skin grafts and was retired in 1946. He was awarded the Battle of Britain Clasp on his 1939-1945 War Medal.

In January 2011, he and Walter Beaumont and Kenneth Manger were commemorated when Manger Gardens, Garside Drive and Beaumont Chase, on the Wheatley Chase development at Keighley Road, Halifax, were named in their honour.

There is a plaque in his memory at Calderdale College

He was sent to Italy [Spring 1917].

He was awarded the Military Medal.

One was for the late Corporal J. H. Garside (RAMC).

Corporal Garside was in a dug-out in Italy with several others when it was hit by a shell. He was blown into the air but fortunately did not suffer any severe injury. He then immediately set to work to extricate his comrades & all bar one were recovered

 

He died as a prisoner of war [14th July 1918].

The Todmorden & District News [27th September 1918] reported


Private J. H. Garside, RAMC, MM, who was taken prisoner on the Italian front three months ago, died of influenza on the 14th of July at Susaune in France.

Awarded the MM and the Italian Medaglia al Valore for gallantry & devotion to duty on the Italian front

Robert died 6th February 1880 (aged 57).

Charlotte died 14th January 1895 (aged 69).

He was a woollen draper [1851] / a linen draper [1861] / one of the founders of Tuel Lane United Methodist Free Chapel.

In [Q1] 1844, he married Sarah Helm [1822-1904] in Halifax.


Sarah was born at 51 Bolton Brow, Sowerby Bridge [22nd May 1822], and was baptised at St Matthew's Church, Rastrick. [11th August 1822]

  1. Mary Jane [1847-1907] who was a worsted spinner [1861]
  2. Louisa [1851-1924]

They lived at Bolton Brow, Sowerby Bridge [1851, 1861].

Living with them [in 1861] was Sarah's mother Grace Helm [b 1794] (proprietor of houses).

Thomas died 13th October 1859.

Probate records show that he left effects valued at under £300.

Letters of Administration were granted to his widow Sarah.

When Sarah died [25th December 1901] (aged 82), an obituary reported that


she was born in, married from, and died in the same house
 

Probate records show that she left effects valued at £875 16/2d.

Probate was granted to Joseph Barron (accountant)

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 2nd/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was reported missing and assumed to have died at Bullecourt [3rd May 1917] (aged 25).

He is remembered on the family grave at Blackley Baptist Graveyard, and on the Arras Memorial, France [Grave Ref 6]

He was educated at Wakefield Grammar School & Queens College Oxford / a teacher at Dulwich College.

During World War I, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion Berkshire Regiment.

He was killed on the Somme [5th April 1917] (aged 31).

He was buried at Templeux-Le-Guerard British Cemetery, France.

He is remembered on the Memorial at Blackley Particular Baptist Church

In 1969, he became licensee of the
King's Arms, Sowerby.

On 31st August 1970, he was in the bar when he picked up a shotgun which he had borrowed to shoot rabbits. He held the gun to his head and pulled the trigger and died immediately. The inquest returned a verdict of Suicide
