John Hayes.

During World War I, he served as a Rifleman with the 17th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps.

He died 13th February 1917.

The Halifax Courier [3rd March 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery, Belgium [Grave Ref V J 15].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Krumlin Methodist Sunday School, Barkisland, and on the family grave at St Thomas's Church, Greetland.

His brother Wilton also died in the War

Born in Elland.

He was a woollen weaver [1835] / landlord of the Rock Tavern, Holywell Green [1851-1857].

On 12th April 1835, he married Sarah Etherington [1809-1873] in Halifax.


Sarah was born in Stainland

  1. Elizabeth [1836-1913] who was a dress maker's apprentice  [1851] & married Thomas Sykes
  2. Grace [b 1839]
  3. Daniel [b 1840]
  4. Martha Ann6

David died at the Rock Tavern in 1857.

After his death, Sarah took over at the Rock Tavern until at least 1861.

She died E in 1873

During World War II, he served as a Trooper with the Royal Armoured Corps 1st Fife and Forfar Yeomanry.

He died between 28th May 1940 & 2nd June 1940 (aged 20).

He was buried at Longuenesse (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, France [Grave Ref 9 A 15]

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 25th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

He died of wounds [19th October 1917] (aged 37).

He was buried at Mont Huon Military Cemetery, France [Grave Ref V A 11B].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on Southowram War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Saint Anne's Church, Southowram

He was a mechanic's labourer [1871] / an electrician / a French polisher [1912].

James died 6th June 1912 (aged 63), and was buried at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 1695] with his parents.

He married F.

They lived at 24 Rochdale Road, West Vale.

During World War I, he served as a Boatswain with the Mercantile Marine Reserves aboard the mercantile fleet auxiliary Purdy.

He died 2nd June 1917 (aged 44)  when his ship was torpedoed by German Submarine U-95, and sank south of the Faroe Islands.

He is remembered on the Plymouth Naval Memorial [Grave Ref 25]

They lived at

  • 4 Whitwell Drive, Elland
  • Warminster, Wiltshire

During World War II, he enlisted [1940], and he served as a Corporal with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers.

He was killed in the Middle East [7th August 1943] (aged 29).

He was buried at Catania War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy [Grave Ref II J 17].

He is remembered on Elland War Memorial

He was educated at in Weymouth, Halifax & Reading and at Durham University.

During World War II, he served as a Flying Officer with the 550th Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

He trained in Canada.

He died when he was shot down over Germany [4th April 1945] (aged 20).

He was buried at Berlin 1939-1945 War Cemetery, Germany [14 J 10-14].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance

He was taken prisoner and died of wounds in Germany, (possibly) 5th October 1918.

He was buried at Sedan-Torcy French National Cemetery, France [Maubert-Fontaine German Cemetery Memorial].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Krumlin Methodist Sunday School, Barkisland, and on the family grave at St Thomas's Church, Greetland.
