Lightcliffe/Hipperholme Post Office

There seems to be some confusion in the records with the Post Offices at Lightcliffe and at Hipperholme.

The following list combines references to the 2 offices:

• 1845: [H] where John Lister was in charge

• 1861: [L] recorded

• 1861: [H] where John Mallinson was a tailor/letter carrier

• 1861: [H] where Jeremiah Gumersal was postmaster

• 1874: [L] recorded. It was then at the same address as the business run by John Mallinson, tailor [L]

• 1874: [H] where Jeremiah Gomersall was postmaster

• 1891: [H] where Herbert Mallinson was postmaster/newsagent

• 1901: [H] where Herbert Mallinson at the Post Office, Wakefield Road, Hipperholme [1901]

• 19??: [L] recorded at the house at the junction of Wakefield Road / Knowle Top Road when Henry Hales was the receiver

• 1903: [L] recorded at 101 Wakefield Road when Herbert Mallinson was in charge.

  The building was originally an hotel for Lightcliffe Railway Station

• 1922 & 1937: [H] it was at the same address as the business run by Miss Florence E. Fitton, stationer and tobacconist

• 1946: [L] recorded when H. D. Owen was postmaster

• 1946: [L] recorded when it moved back to 101 Wakefield Road [1972]

• 1950s: [L] recorded when Bleak House, Lightcliffe was used as the post office and Mr Sagar was postmaster

This was one of 11 local post offices which – despite popular protests – were closed in August 2008
