She was a herbalist in Halifax.

On 4th November 1879, she was charged with

administering a noxious drug for an unlawful purpose ... killing and slaying through abortion, Esther Davies, a domestic servant, who recently died in the Bradford Workhouse

The police found

some instruments

in Helliwell's house.

In 1880, she was charged at Leeds Assizes for the wilful murder of Esther Davies [1852-1879]. William Booth, landlord of the Boar's Head Hotel, Halifax, was charged with being an accessory before the fact.

The Court heard that Esther had been seduced by a married man, Nathan Horsfall, and upon finding herself

they and a friend called Hird, went to Boar's Head where Booth suggested that they visit Helliwell who

would be able to do what they wanted

Helliwell agreed to perform an abortion for £3.

Esther stayed with Helliwell for 2 days. When she returned to Bradford, she was very ill and was taken to Bradford Workhouse where she died a few days later from peritonitis and blood-poisoning.

Helliwell was found guilt of manslaughter and sentenced to 20 years' penal servitude. Booth was acquitted

A widow of Slack, Sowerby Bridge.

She had lived for some years with her son, Henry Helliwell, her granddaughter, Mary Ann Helliwell, and her brother, Thomas Cockcroft.

On 20th June 1865, she and her brother were left alone in the house. At noon, a visitor found Mrs Helliwell lying injured and speechless on the floor of the cottage. A pair of bent tongs were found near her body. She never recovered to be able to give an account of the incident before she died on the 27th June.

Thomas Cockcroft was charged with her murder

He was an asylum attendant in Ohio, USA [1914].

When World War I broke out, he returned to England, and he served as a Company Sergeant Major with the London Regiment.

He served in Gallipoli and Egypt.

He was killed in action [15th September 1916] (aged 36).

The Halifax Courier [4th November 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

After basic training, he was sent to Salonica.

He died in hospital in Salonika [31st December 1918].

Private Harry Helliwell, Motor Transport Service, died at Salonica on the 31st of December following an operation for an intestinal obstruction, aged 21.

Helliwell / in partnership with his father Thomas at Friths Old Mill [1813-1823] / in partnership with his brother William at Friths Old Mill [1823-1856] / in partnership with the executors of his brother William at  Friths Old Mill [1856-1865] / in partnership with his sons John and Thomas at  Holebottom Mill [1853-1864].

He married Mary [1793-1865].

Bankruptcy of John Helliwell, manufacturer and farmer of Todmorden. Debts of £22,679 4/- and Assets about £2,000.

He sold out to the Fielden Brothers [1865].

All his vast properties and lands were put up for auction – East Heyhead, East and West Greenhurst Hey, Windy Harbour, and cottages at Wickenberry Clough, Holebottom Mill and Stansfield Cottage (all in Stansfield). This was the end of the Helliwell dynasty at Greenhurst Hey.

Lance Corporal John Edward Helliwell, Manchester Regiment, killed instantly by a shell on active duty on the morning of the 6th of April.

His mother, grocer, of Ashenhurst Street [home] and Burnley Road [shop], Todmorden.

A younger brother [Fred Waldo Helliwell] had to give up a boot & clogging business to join the army and is currently in training

 

The Todmorden & District News [21st April 1916] published his photograph and one of his last letters home, printed in full.

He was buried at Bronfay Farm Military Cemetery, Bray-sur-Somme, France [Grave Ref I B 25].

At the Spring Assizes in 1851, the jury returned a verdict of Not Guilty on both defendants.

DEATH BY SCALDING.

On Wednesday 15th February 1871, forenoon a Coroner's enquiry was held at Todmorden into the death of HERBERT, age 5 years, son of THOMAS HELLIWELL, a Carter of Lydgate.

The evidence was to the effect that deceased was in a pea booth at Lydgate, near Todmorden on Saturday, and in the absence of the owner, had drunk hot gravy from a kettle left upon the table in the booth.

He was so severely scalded in the mouth and throat that he died on Sunday.

In 1823, he inherited much of his father's half share of the Friths estate and mill

He was an Overseer of the Poor [1838] / a farmer of 32 acres employing 1 agricultural labourer / partner in W. & J. Helliwell.

In 1834, he built a Friths New Mill on the opposite side of the road to Friths Old Mill. He, and later his widow and 2 daughters took over the running of Friths Mills, Dulesgate.

He was a keen supporter of St Mary's Church in Todmorden, and in 1840, he was appointed as a member of a deputation and committee charged with raising a petition and delivering it to the incumbent at St Chad's in Rochdale regarding the restoration and re-opening of St Mary's Church, which had been left derelict for several years.

In 1828, he married Sarah Midgley [1803-1891].

They lived at Friths House, Dulesgate, Todmorden [1838].

He died intestate. Letters of Administration were granted to his widow [January 1859].

He was a woolcomber [1851] / a woollen weaver [1861].

He was charged with the murder of his mother, Betty.

Betty's bruised and disfigured body was found by her son, David, in Flat Head stone quarry near her home on 26th September 1862. William and his mother had earlier quarrelled over payment for the keep of a cow belonging to James Parsons of Upper Lumb, Cottonstones.

The inquest was held at the Bee Hive, Soyland. The Jury concluded that there was no evidence that William had murdered his mother, and returned an open verdict. William was acquitted

Horsfall Turner describes him as

... a walking encyclopædia ... a teetotaller and vegetarian ... rambling far and near to pick up a book at bookstalls, and searching catalogues of old books with avidity
