His bride is Miss Prudence Annie Helliwell, formerly of Brown
Birks Farm, Cornholme, and is at present a nurse in a London hospital.
They were married in their respective uniforms.
They arrived in Todmorden on Saturday night then visited the bride's
parents who now live at Nelson
They had no children.
During World War I,
he enlisted in Manchester [5th April 1904]
and served as a Sergeant
with the Royal Marine Light Infantry.
He was promoted to Corporal [October 1911] then to Acting
Sergeant [November 1914].
He was killed in action at Gallipoli [6th May 1915] (aged 28).
The Todmorden & District News [4th June 1915] reported his death with a photograph
He had been in the Royal Marines for eleven years.
He saw active service in the West Indies during the time of the Hayti
[Haiti] troubles and took part in quelling the disturbances at
Venezuela and at Honduras.
For four years, he was an instructor in motor driving at Gosport.
On 27th of August 1914, he was with the Royal Marines when 3,500 of
them landed at Ostend.
He said they got a magnificent reception from the people there.
They set about fortifying the city and the Germans who had been
heading there decided against attacking them
He is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli [Grave Ref 2-7],
and in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance.
