Baptised on 19th September 1754.

He was Deputy Lieutenant for the West Riding / a woollen manufacturer at Jumples Mill, Ovenden [1785] / a baize & kersey manufacturer & merchant in Halifax [1809].

On 4th December 1781, he married Jane Watson at Felkirk, Yorkshire.

Children:

  1. Jane [b 30th April 1788] who married [St James's Church,  Halifax 10th December 1810] Clement Royds of Rochdale
  2. Joshua [1790-1864] who married Jane Abbott  [1790-1863]

Charles died at Shaw Hill, Halifax.

He was buried at St James's Church, Halifax [15th February 1815]


By probate [May 1815] Charles Hudson of Skircoat bequeathed his mansion in Shaw Hill, in which he lived, to his son Joshua Hudson.

The property stood on the north side of Shaw Lane near Gaukroger Lane adjacent to the future railway line and the mansion wherein Jeremiah Rossendale once lived.

Records indicate that Joshua did not move into Shaw Hill on his father's death and was of Haxby in December 1819

He died 16th May 1915 (aged 26).

He was buried at Guards' Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France [Grave Ref VIII G 14].

He was a worsted bobbin setter [1901] / a mechanic for machine tool maker [1911] / a fitter with Farrar's of Winding Road, Halifax.

He lived at 72 St Peter's Street, Halifax.

During World War I, he enlisted [August 1914] and served as a Private with the 8th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed at Langemarck by a shell which burst beside him as he and an officer were going to another post [11th August 1917] (aged 28).

The Halifax Courier [1st September 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium [Grave Ref 20] in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Roll of Honour at an unidentified United Methodist Church

Born in York. He moved to the Todmorden area by 1841.

Around 1845, he organised an anti-religious group. Their meetings mocked formal religious services. Many of his followers – known as Hudsonites – came from the Shade, Gauxholme and Knowlwood districts of Todmorden. They held their annual meetings on Spaw Sunday at the Basin Stone, Todmorden. They supported the Chartists and worn green coats to show this.
