A quarryman in Halifax.

At the Yorkshire Summer Assizes in August 1880, he was charged with the manslaughter of William Smith on 27th June 1880.

On the evening of 26th June 1880, Smith and Bridget Edwards left home and went to the Talbot Inn, Halifax. Smith went down into the vaults.

Hargreaves was drinking in the Inn with Mr Barber and Mr Pearson, and Smith asked Hargreaves to let him in.

Hargreaves refused and Smith struck him. Hargreaves struck him back on the mouth, and Smith fell to the floor with blood coming from his mouth.

Smith was insensible and Edwards took him home in a cab, and, on the doctor's advice to the Infirmary. He died the following morning.

At the post mortem, Dr Hammond found bruises on the left and right temples, with a clot of blood and an abscess on the skull, and he told the Jury that the clot of blood was the result of violence and could have caused the concussion of the brain, but the abscess would have accelerated Smith's death.

The Jury returned a verdict of not guilty and Hargreaves was acquitted

He and his siblings – including Robert – were brought up at Hazelhurst, Sowerby Bridge.

He went to Goole Primary School [1940] and Sowerby Bridge Grammar School [1947]. After leaving school, he served in the RAF. He went into advertising and worked for Greenly's in Bradford before going to London working as a copy writer.

In 1960, he married Margaret Christine Heard.

He enlisted in June 1915, joining the band of the Welsh Regiment. After the band was broken up, he was sent to France [December 1916] as a member of the Lewis gun section of the regiment

He died of pneumonia at the 3rd Canadian General Hospital, Boulogne [6th November 1918] (aged 29).

The Halifax Courier [23rd November 1918] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France [Grave Ref X C 6].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, and on the Halifax Parish Church Members (WWI) Memorial

In 1886, Herbert Lyon – who was on visiting terms with Hargreaves – was charged with obtaining money from the Halifax branch of the Yorkshire Penny Bank. Lyon had obtained a book belonging to Hargreaves, and presented it to the Bank on 2 occasions, and, by means of misrepresentation, succeeded in getting money. Hargreaves discovered the loss when he received an anonymous letter, said to be in Lyon's handwriting
