He was held in reserve [until 10th September 1915] when he went to the Front. He sailed from Southampton to Le Havre [29th June 1916] aboard SS La Marguerite. He was promoted to Lance Corporal [1st August 1916].

He was killed in action [3rd September 1916].

The Halifax Courier [30th September 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

On Wednesday 5th May 1869, he was injured as he was picking some waste off a planing machine. His thigh was broken and his abdomen so severely injured that there was little hope of his recovery. He was taken to the Infirmary where he died the next day.

He was landlord of the George, Brighouse [1826, 1837, 1840].

The Halifax Guardian [5th March 1842] reported the case of Horner v. Flintoff who succeeded Horner at the George Brighouse:


Flintoff was indebted to Horner in a sum of money in respect of his having given up certain messuages and premises, also for goods and chattels delivered, and for money paid. Flintoff pleaded first a denial, secondly, he pleaded payment on which issue was joined, and thirdly set off.

The Jury found a verdict for Horner: Damages: £86 19s 8d

She was a friend and contemporary of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth.

Her work includes various religious works, a bust of Phyllis Bentley, a bronze figure of Vernon W. Wanklyn [1930], a figure of Mrs Patrick Crossley [1930], a bronze group of the Brontë sistersCharlotte,  Emily and Anne – which won the Leeds Gold Medal [1951], and a head of Sir John Barbirolli.

In 1937, she abandoned art and turned her attention to the welfare of the blind, Red Cross nursing, and animal welfare.

Around 1952, she studied modelling at Leeds, and became a member of staff at the Halifax School of Art.

He was a generous member of Salem Methodist New Connexion Chapel, North Parade.

Halifax-born artist and portrait-painter.

He painted portraits of himself, James Lister & Anne Lister which hangs in Shibden Hall. These can be seen on the Art UK website

Joshua travelled with a Halifax architect friend to France & Italy [leaving England on 8th August 1840]. They were in Geneva [September 1840], Milan [October 1840] and Rome [by January 1841].

He wrote letters home to his father, and with his agreement & that of his father, Henry Martin took extracts from Joshua's letters & published them in the Halifax Express.

By March 1841, Martin had ceased being the proprietor & editor of the Halifax Express, and some time later, he decided to publish the extracts himself – these are currently held by the Bodleian Library, Oxford.

After his father's death [1867], Joshua dedicated a fine stained glass window in his memory at Salem Chapel along with the Horner Charity bequest for

the poor of Salem

He never married.

He lived at 11 Bond Street, Halifax, with Sarah Hellowell [b  1824] (cook/domestic servant) [1881].

Joshua died 28th September 1881.

Probate records show that he left a personal estate valued at £1,588 2/9d.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 1st/5th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).

He died on his way to the dressing station after being hit wilst bringing up rations [26th April 1918] (aged 29).

He was buried at Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium [Grave Ref X C 25].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.

His brother-in-law Arnold Cully also died in the War
