In April 1894, he and William Flynn, of the Old Model Lodging
House, also a presser, were working at the Works when the floor gave
way.
Hinchliffe was thrown into a well under the pressing machine.
The well was over 9 ft deep and contained about 4 ft of water at
120° produced by condensed steam.
Hinchcliffe was immediately pulled out, but he was dead and
his skin left the bones.
Dr William Charteris was called and said that Hinchcliffe
must have died instantaneously.
Flynn saved himself by holding on to a pipe, though he was
scalded about the eyes

known as the Great Yorkshire Basso.
He was invited to sing before Queen Victoria in London.
In 1856, after the death of his daughters, he left Leeds and became
Bandmaster of the 4th West York Militia at Hull.
Around 1862, he was Bandmaster of Stainland Brass Band.

In July 1878, he had an attack of paralysis at Walsden Railway Station from which he never fully recovered.
He moved from Gauxholme to Walsden and then to Dombey Street,
Halifax, where he died.

He enlisted in Halifax, and served 12 years in the 9th Lancers [23rd
November 1886-18th November 1898].
In [Q1] 1898, he married Mary Walsh [1872-1954] in Halifax.
They lived at 2 Mile Cross Place, Grosvenor Terrace, Halifax.
On 29th December 1899, Thomas re-enlisted into 11th (Yorkshire
Dragoons) Company, 3rd Battalion The Imperial Yeomanry as a Private;
three weeks later [20th January 1900] he was promoted to Sergeant.
He went to South Africa [28th January 1900].
He was a Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant with the Imperial Yeomanry
during the Boer Wars.
He was awarded the Queen's South Africa medal
He died at sea from enteric fever [23rd May 1901], on his way home
aboard the SS Mongolian.
He is remembered on the Halifax Parish Church South African War Memorial,
on West View Park War Memorial,
and on his wife's family grave at All Saints' Church, Dudwell.
Probate records show that he left effects valued at £1,392 18/9d.
Administration was granted to his widow Mary.
