General Notes

Illingworth is a district to the north of Halifax in the township of Ovenden.

Since the 1950s, large parts of Illingworth, Ovenden, and Wheatley have been housing estates.

The name means enclosure of rough land or enclosure belonging to Illa or Ylla.

The original church of St Mary the Virgin dates from the 16th century.

It is the origin of the surname Illingworth which was first recorded in 1285.
