Private Edwin Kershaw was killed instantaneously by a shell at about 11 a.m. on Tuesday 23rd November, aged 24.

Two other members of his platoon were killed by the same shell

 

The Todmorden Advertiser & Hebden Bridge Newsletter [10th December 1915] reported his death


Private Young Dewhirst of 270 Halifax Road and Private Edwin Kershaw of 3 Oldroyd, both of the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, were killed in France on Tuesday 23rd November.

They enlisted together in April 1915, went out to France together at the end of July and both fell at the same time

 

He was buried at White House Cemetery, St. Jean-les-Ypres, Belgium [Grave Ref III D 15].

an imbecile, of weak intellect & subject to epileptic fits

After her mother's death in 1876, Betty went to live with her brother James Kershaw and his wife Maria at Slead Syke, Brighouse.

In 1877, Betty's bruised and bleeding body was found in an emaciated condition, a result of neglect and ill-treatment by Maria.

On 14th March 1877, at Leeds Assizes, Maria was sentenced to 10 years' penal servitude for the manslaughter of Elizabeth Kershaw at Brighouse

In 1752, persuaded by his wife, he joined the Methodists and made several journeys with John Wesley, including visits to Scotland,

In 1757, he became an independent minister in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, where he also sold quack medicines.

In 1765, he rejoined the Methodists and supported Wesley in the controversy of the 1770s. He published a poem entitled The Methodist which upset Wesley and prompted him to prohibit Methodist preachers from producing unauthorised publications.

It is said that, in the mid 1840s, he was the first person to spread the Methodist ministry in Northern Ireland, visiting County Armagh.

In 1776, he left the Methodists again and went to Gainsborough and then to Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, where he died and was buried.

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £100 10/10d.

Probate was granted to his widow Eliza.

The couple were buried at Rastrick Cemetery.

He is remembered on Brighouse War Memorial, and on Rastrick War Memorial

He was educated at Rishworth School, travelling between America &  Yorkshire / educated at Oxford / one of the top lawyers in the USA / involved with the Declaration of Independance / a US Congressman.

The son of one of Camden's founders, he attended England's Oxford College, studied law, and became an attorney in Camden, also operating a plantation, a grain mill, a store and other businesses.

He served in local offices including Tobacco Inspector and County Judge, and in 1790 he was a Delegate to the state convention held to consider ratification of the new US Constitution.

Kershaw served in the South Carolina House of Representatives [1792-1794, 1800-1801], and was Mayor of Camden [1798, 1801, 1811].

From 1806 to 1810 he was county Justice of Quorum, an administrative and notarial position.

During the War of 1812, Kershaw served in the First South Carolina Light Dragoons with the rank of Captain.

In 1812, he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democratic-Republican and served one term [1813-1815].

During his term, Kershaw served as Chairman of the Committee on Accounts.

He ran unsuccessfully for re-election in 1814, afterwards returning to his business interests and plantation, also serving as Mayor of Camden again in 1822

Not only that, but he had also assaulted two police officers, PC Stopford and PC Turner on the same day. He was fined 40 shillings for the gaming offence, and 20 shillings for each case of assault. Together with the costs, it added up to £5 10/-

After his death, his son James Crossley Kershaw took over at the Butchers' Arms.

He, John Dean & Walter Allen drowned on a trip to Saltburn [26th June 1871].

The three men put to sea with two others in a coble. The water was rough and people on the beach had been warned not to venture to sea. The coble was hit by several breakers. Three of the men ran to the stern, causing the vessel to upset.

The Inquest returned a verdict of accidental drowning.

A reservist, he was called up on 8th August 1914, drafted into the 2nd West Ridings and sent to the front in September.

His last letter, dated 11th April, read:

I must admit I'm getting a bit homesick.

Since I came out here, I have faced death thousands of times.

Things are now getting a bit lively. I expect the struggle will be a costly one, but I am convinced we shall win.

I hope to be home for the July holidays.

In my kit bag, there is a German helmet and I hope to bring this back to Charlestown

John Edward Kershaw, Duke of Wellington's Regiment, was shot dead in action on the 18th of April, aged 26.

He was a reservist and was called up just after the commencement of hostilities

 

He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium [Grave Ref 20], and in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance.

In 1748, he and his brothers, Ely and William, emigrated to South Carolina, USA where they founded Kershaw County.

Joseph was

  • A clerk for James Laurens, a Charleston merchant
  • A businessman

    In 1758, he settled northwest of Charleston near the Wateree River at Pine Tree Hill, and founded a store Joseph Kershaw & Company.

    In 1763, he formed a partnership with his brother Ely, John Chesnut, William Ancrum, and Aaron Loocock. in Charleston.

    He and his partners acquired grants for several thousand acres of land across the colony.

    His own trading operations made him the leading commercial, and subsequently political, figure in the Wateree River region, with business operations included a large flour & grist mill, indigo works, a warehouse, a brewery, and a distillery.

    In 1769, he was a member of a group in the Pine Tree Hill district who planned a series of streets and lots, which became the town of Camden

  • A politician – elected to the Commons House of Assembly [1769]
  • Involved in mediating a peaceful settlement to the South Carolina Regulator movement [1769]
  • A soldier / colonel in South Carolina Patriot militia in the Revolutionary War.

    Fighting on the American side, he saw action at Purrysburg and Stono River and was captured at the Battle of Camden [16th August 1780]. He was imprisoned at British Honduras and then exiled to Bermuda by General Cornwallis and the 33rd Regiment of Foot. He was eventually exchanged and returned to South Carolina

On 20th October 1762, he married Sarah Mathis in Charles Town, South Carolina. Children:

In 1862, he published

He Fought for his Native Land

A Narrative of the Peninsular Veteran, William Kershaw, being a concise and faithful account of the numerous encounters and hair-breadth escapes to which a soldier is exposed in military warfare

He joined the 2nd West Yorkshire Militia to learn drill, and then planned to join the Regular Army.

In April 1809, he volunteered for the 43rd Light Infantry. He fought in the Peninsular Wars, but arrived one day too late to fight at the Battle of Talavera [July 1809].

In 1814, he sailed to West Indies and New Orleans.

In June 1815, he went to Belgium, arriving Brussels, because Napoleon had escaped from Elba. His pamphlet suggest that he didn't actually fight at the Battle of Waterloo, but took part in the evacuation of the wounded.

He was discharged from the army, and arrived back in Norland on Whit Tuesday in June 1816, having been away 8 years and 7 months.

He seems to have worked as a woollen handloom weaver for most of life afterwards, living at Dean Lane, Sowerby.

In 1842, he married Maria [1780-1864].


Maria was the widow of Mr Mitchell
 

He won medals and clasps for battles he fought at Busaco, Ciudad Rodrigo, Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, the Pyrenees, San Sebastian, Nivelle, Nive, and Toulouse.
