Local Listed Buildings

This Foldout collects the entries for some listed buildings and scheduled monuments in the district

The Foldout comprises several parts:

General Notes about Listed Buildings

A scheduled ancient monument is any building or site or monument which is considered to be of national importance and which is put on a statutory list – known as the schedule – such that permission has to be sought from the appropriate authority before carrying out any work and/or developments which might affect the monument or its setting.

In England, the schedule is drawn up by the Secretary of State for the Environment under the advice of English Heritage. English Heritage provides resources for architectural conservation.

The appropriate authorities are English Heritage in England, Cadw in Wales, Historic Scotland in Scotland, and Manx National Heritage in the Isle of Man.

If a scheduled monument is actually inhabited, it is known as a listed building.

The listing system incorporates all buildings built prior to 1700 which have not been substantially altered, and almost all those built between 1700 and 1840.

The Town & Country Planning Act [1990] provides for recognition of the following grades of listed buildings:

Grade I this is the most stringent category, and is granted for buildings of exceptional interest. These constitute less than 2% of entries on the list

Grade II this is the most common category, accounting for about 94% of all listed buildings, and is for buildings of special interest warranting every effort to preserve them

Grade II* this category is for buildings of particular importance and of more than special interest. These constitute about 4% of entries

Listed Building Consent must be gained from the local authority in order to demolish or alter a listed building.

There are about 4500 listed buildings and scheduled ancient monuments in the Calderdale district, about 500,000 in England, and around 1 million in Britain as a whole; this is the largest number in any country in Western Europe.

Some local Listed Buildings & Scheduled Monuments

Malcolm Bull's Calderdale Companion contains entries for some of the Listed Buildings & Scheduled Monuments in Calderdale. This is very much an idiosyncratic selection. I have not yet included all the local listed buildings and scheduled monuments here – only those which are of special interest or have an interesting feature or period

Buildings on the At Risk Register

A number of local buildings are on English Heritage's Buildings At Risk Register

The list of local buildings which are on the current Register includes
