She was recorded as deaf / monthly nurse [1911]

He was a coal miner (drawer) below ground [1911]

His widowed mother and the family moved from Accrington to Cornholme in December 1914.

During World War I, he enlisted [January 1915] and served as a Private with the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment).

He was killed in action in France [23rd July 1915] (aged 19).

The Todmorden & District News [13th August 1915] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Divisional Cemetery, Belgium [Grave Ref C 24].

He is remembered in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance

Baptised at St Martin's Church, Brighouse [29th January 1871].

He joined the family fish & game business, and ran The Cash Fish Stores [1901].

On 2nd December 1889, he married Annie Crowther [1864-1938] at Halifax Parish Church.


Annie already had a child: Olive Crowther (Lancaster) [1887-1982] who emigrated to the USA [1912], made several trips back to the UK after World War I, and died in Los Angeles. On 25th May 1919, Olive made a trip back to the UK shortly before her stepfather's death

  2. George Herbert [1892-1938] who was a fish & game dealer  [1919]
  3. Millicent [1894-1967]

Annie died in Blackpool in 1938
