On 1st March 1910, he sailed from Liverpool to the USA, aboard the SS Ivernia bound for Providence, Rhode Island. A George Lumb was listed next to Albert on the ship's Manifest.

There is evidence that he served with US soldiers during World War I. He also completed draft registration documents in the 1940s, but it is not clear whether he served in the military.

By 1940, he had a wife, Elizabeth [1873-1973].


Elizabeth was born in New Jersey.

On 19th September 1839, Eli came home drunk and had a disagreement with his wife. He told her to go outside, locked the door, and went to bed, taking the key with him. Their son Thomas, who was asleep and awoken by the noise, went to let his mother back into the house. Not being able to find the doorkey, Thomas disturbed Eli who then stabbed Thomas in the thigh and the chest. As Thomas lay dying, Eli ran off.

At the Inquest, the jury found Eli guilty of wilful murder and he was sent for trial at the Spring Assizes.

The Leeds Intelligencer [Saturday 14th March 1840] reported


At the Spring Assizes [11th March 1840], Eli Lumb, charged with killing and slaying Thomas Lumb at Halifax, was placed at the bar, and the Grand Jury having thrown out a bill for manslaughter Mr Knowles said that no evidence would be offered on the charge under Coroner's Inquisition.

The prisoner was accordingly acquitted

During World War I, he enlisted [September 1914] – the first employee of the Halifax Permanent Benefit Building Society to do so – and he served with the 4th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was promoted to Lance Corporal [March 1915], Corporal [January 1916], and Sergeant [July 1916].

He was sent to France in April 1915.

He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal [1917]


for conspicuous devotion to duty. He has performed consistent good work throughout, and has rendered most valuable service
 

His photograph appears with a report of his award in the Halifax Courier [20th January 1917]. He was demobilised in 1919 (aged 23)

He had a sweetheart, Vera.

During World War I, he enlisted with the West Yorkshire Regiment [20th May 1918], then transferred and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.

He was drafted to France on 11th September 1918.

He was killed in action on his first day on the line [18th September 1918] (aged 20).

He is remembered on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, France [Grave Ref 4], and in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance.

He was charged with killing
John Milnes on 29th December 1835.

Lumb had been taken into custody in a state of intoxication, and held at the night asylum, of which Milnes was the keeper.

Inside the gaol, Lumb broke windows and anything else which he could demolish. Milnes tried to remove Lumb's shows, the prevent further damage, but Lumb kicked Milnes in the abdomen, and he died shortly afterwards.

At the trial, witnesses proved that Lumb was of unsound mind, and the Jury returned a verdict of Not Guilty on grounds of insanity, and he was to remain in custody during His Majesty's pleasure

On 21st February 1824, Mally made a bastardy bond to Lot Bottomley, weaver of Sowerby, putative father of her bastard son George, born about 6 weeks ago.

Mally and Lot never married although it was generally known that they were George's parents. It is said that Lot refused, though his reasons are unknown.

In 1851, she was a boarder at 2 Thunderton Lane, which is off Toothill Lane, and very near Little Toothill farm, where Lot Bottomley and George Lumb and family lived.

She died at the Almshouses, Sowerby [20th February 1870]

wanton behaviour and shameful perversity, on account of the peril to which his furious driving subjected his passengers.

He was a member of Sowerby Bridge cricket team / a member of Ryburn Golf Club / a teacher at Wellington College.

During World War I, he enlisted with the Bradford Pals at the beginning of the War, then he served as a Captain with the Machine Gun Corps.

He went to France [March 1916] and was slightly wounded in the Battle of the Somme [1916] and again at Cambrai [1917]. He sustained severe gunshot wounds [22nd March 1918] and was hospitalised in London. He was awarded the Military Cross

His photograph appears with a report of his story in the Halifax Courier [8th June 1918].

He survived the War.

In [Q2] 1823, he married Muriel Whitmore in Hinckley.

He died at Hinckley [Q2 1972]

He was an active Unitarian / a Trustee of Northgate End Chapel [1861] / a great philanthropist / one of the founders of the Halifax General Cemetery Company [1836] / a successful Halifax merchant / a shrewd investor and company director / a Commissioner of Property & Income Tax [1845] / a member of the committee of the West Yorkshire Railway Company / a partner in the Halifax Commercial Banking Company [1853].

He supported many local charities for underprivileged girls and boys. Moved by the plight of many young boys being sent to the workhouse, he set up a Trust Fund to place them in Industrial Schools so that they could be educated, he found jobs for them and helped them back into society.

His staff included John Barker Kendall and Benjamin Hebden.

In 1850s, he moved to Cheltenham taking with him many of his staff and their families.

He was a great horticulturalist and in May 1860, with the help of Benjamin Hebden, his head gardener, he won the RHS Silver Cup as first prize for 10 azaleas at the Cheltenham Flower Show.

Yesterday afternoon, Sam Lumb, delver, of Chapel House, Moor End, Mount Tabor, met with a shocking accident whilst working at Moor End Quarries. Deceased and his son were working together at a bag? store at the time. They were trying to lay it flat on the ground, when it slipped and came into contact with a crow bar which the elder man had in one hand. Deceased was knocked down, and rolling, he fell into the quarry below. Death ensued shortly afterwards, before the arrival of Dr Ernest Crowther, of Luddenden, who had immediately responded to the urgent call for his services
 

Lucy Ann died 3rd May 1915 (aged 64).

Mr Heap was a soldier who had gone off to war and was presumed dead.

Mr Heap was not dead and returned to find his wife remarried. Heap sold his wife to her new husband, and delivered her to Lumb in a halter at Halifax Cross.

On 1st October 1827, at the age of 83, Samuel married Rachael for a second time at Halifax Parish Church.

Samuel was buried at St Peter's Church, Sowerby [28th May 1830].

On 11th January 1905, he left work at 11:00 am and spent the afternoon in a public house before returning home at 4:45 pm. He refused his tea and went into the barn. His mother later found him hanging by a rope from a ladder. She pulled him down, but he was dead

Son of George Stott Lumb.

He was a member of Mill Bank Wesleyan Methodist Chapel & Sunday School / a dairy farmer (own account) at Little London Farm, Triangle.

During World War I, he enlisted in Halifax [11th July 1916] and served as a Private with the 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers.

He died of wounds at a Casualty Clearing Station [13th July 1917].

The Halifax Courier [11th August 1917] reported his death with a photograph.

He was buried at Adinkerke Churchyard Extension, Belgium [Grave Ref 812].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Saint Peter's Church, Sowerby, on the Memorial at Saint George's Church, Sowerby, on Triangle War Memorial, on the Memorial at Mill Bank Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, on the Memorial at Saint Mary's Church, Cottonstones, and on Norland War Memorial

His brother Walton also died in the War

He was killed in action [14th April 1918].

He was a stone quarryman [1901] / employed at Sutcliffe's quarries, Mount Tabor.

During World War I, he enlisted [March 1916] and served as a Private with the 2nd/7th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment).

He was killed at Bullecourt during the 2nd Battle of the Somme [3rd May 1917] (aged 39).

He is remembered on the family grave at Moor End Congregational Church, Pellon, and on the Arras Memorial, France [Grave Ref 6].

Probate records show that he left effects valued at £257 1/1d.

Administration was granted to his sister Lily Lumb (spinster)
