Born 2nd October 1811.
Baptised at Square Chapel [26th October 1811].
In 1841, he was living with Mary Bancroft [b 1786] at Union
Street, Halifax.
In 1851, he was a proprietor of houses lodging with Elizabeth
& William Whitaker at High Street, Halifax.
Copley died 9th July 1854 (aged 42)
He and his sister Ann were buried at Lister Lane Cemetery
[Plot 260]
He was born in Southgate, Halifax.
About the age of 4, he contracted smallpox which left him almost
blind.
He was sent to an institution for the blind at Liverpool, where he
learned the trade of basket making.
On returning to Halifax, he worked as a basket-maker, and he also
worked for the coaching office, delivering parcels brought to the
town by the London, Leeds and Manchester coaches.
At the age of 20, he became totally blind, but his retentive memory
enabled him to find his way around.
In the 1820s, he was appointed
town crier, succeeding Nathaniel Scholfield.
On 16th April 1831, he married Hannah Taylor.
Children:
They lived at Swine Market, Halifax [1837].
David went on to make and sell blacking, travelling
around the district with his wares.
He was a regular at the Rose & Crown, Cheapside.
His son John acted as deputy town crier and took over
some of his father's duties when David became infirm in the
1860s.
David died 22nd October 1875 (aged 84).
John Simpson succeeded David as town-crier.

In [Q2] 1860, he married Elizabeth Ann Watson [1836-1870] in Halifax.

John died 16th October 1872 (aged 39).
He was buried 26th October 1875.

He was churchwarden at Elland in 1778 and 1780.
For 33 years, the first group of Methodists in Elland met at his
house in Southgate.
When John Wesley preached at Elland in August 1762, it may have
been at the house.
He was buried at Elland Parish Church.
