Harold Vincent Mackintosh

[1891-1964]



Harold Vincent Mackintosh JP. DL. LLD. of Acre Mead, Halifax, the Rt. Hon. Lord Mackintosh of Halifax, First Viscount Mackintosh of Halifax, was the eldest of three sons of Violet and John Mackintosh.

He was educated at Halifax New School, and for 2 years in Germany.

He worked for the Mackintosh family confectionery business in Germany from 1909-11.

He became Chairman of the firm from 1920, when his father died.

On 8th June 1916, he married Constance Emily Stoneham [18??-1975].


Constance Emily was the second daughter of Edgar Cooper Stoneham OBE of Acton, London

After his marriage, the family went to live at Knaresborough, and then at Greystones, Luddenden and Thickthorn Hall, Norfolk.

He was a Magistrate / involved in the amalgamation of a group of Halifax building  societies into the Halifax Building Society [1928] / Vice-chairman of the National War Savings Association [1941]

He was knighted in January 1922 for his work as President of the World Sunday School Association. On 3rd May 1924, he was elected president of the National Sunday School Union.

On 22nd November 1927, he was elected president of Yorkshire Agricultural Society.

He was keen on advertising and marketing. He was President of the Advertising Association [1942-1946].

In 1936, he conceived the company's Quality Street product

He built up an important collection of Toby Jugs which was sold at auction by Sotheby & Company on 2nd May 1967. He was interested in pottery, and he wrote a standard book on the subject: Early English Figure Pottery [Chapman & Hall 1938].

He wrote a memoir of his father.

On 28th January 1935, he was made a Baronet, 1st Baron Mackintosh of Halifax.

On 6th February 1948, he became Lord Mackintosh of Halifax.

On 10th July 1957, he became Viscount Mackintosh of Halifax.

He was Deputy Lieutenant of the West Riding
