He was a worsted doffer [1881] / an elementary school teacher [1891] / part-time editor of The Halifax Naturalist / editor of The Cambridge British Flora [1914, 1920].

In 1890, on account of a pulmonary abscess, he was advised to take outdoor rambles, and he developed an interest in botany.

He studied at the University of Manchester, gaining a doctorate in 1907.

He married Unknown.

Child: Beatrice

His wife was unfaithful, and the marriage was dissolved. He & his daughter sailed to South Africa [1917], where he was appointed Professor of Botany at the South African School of Mines & Technology in Johannesburg.

He died at Johannesburg [11th November 1930].

On 20th June 1931, his ashes were interred in the family grave at Lister Lane Cemetery [Plot 1498]

On 13th January 1899, Joe Smith [24], a boiler maker, shot Moss at Halifax, with intent to murder him. Moss and Detective Crowther had gone to the Railway Hotel, Halifax to make enquiries about a jacket which was missing from the home of Smith's father. Smith produced a pistol from his pocket and fired, just missing Moss. The jury found Smith guilty of shooting with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and he was sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude

He was landlord of the Ivy Beerhouse, Elland.

On 3rd November 1900, he was charged with keeping a bagatelle board without a licence. PC Cook had gone into the pub and saw millhand Herbert Saville and labourer Eddy Dyson playing bagatelle for money.

For not having a licence, Moss was fined 5/-, and for permitting gaming, he was fined 10/- plus costs. Saville and Dyson were each fined 10/- plus costs for aiding and abetting.

He left to run the Yorkshire House pub in Hulme, Lancashire.

He died 27th February 1911
