It is said that

he saw the loss of the Lusitania as a war crime, and enlisted to help the women & children of France & Belgium – he must have been thinking of his three older sisters and their young children, and he could not bear to consider the suffering of other young mothers

He served as a Gunner with the 11th Brigade Australian Field Artillery.

He died of wounds [2nd August 1917] (aged 23).

He was buried at Godewaersvelde British Cemetery, France [Grave Ref I C 2]

Gunner J. H. Midgley died in hospital on Tuesday last week [17th October] from wounds sustained in France.

He joined up soon after the outbreak of war.

He was wounded in the shoulder & knee last April & treated in Audenshaw Hospital. Once he recovered, he rejoined his battery but kept having trouble with his injured knee

He was a member of Walsden Wesleyan Sunday School / a cotton weaver [1901] / a carter [1911] / a cart driver [1915].

During World War I, he enlisted at Todmorden [4th December 1915] and was appointed to the 3rd West Riding Regiment at Halifax [1st March 1916]. He was transferred, serving as a Private with the 89th Company Machine Gun Corps, and sent to France [July 1916].

He was wounded in action in his back and legs [31st July 1917], and died of his wounds in the field hospital at Étaples [13th August 1917] aged 31 years.

The Todmorden & District News [24th August 1917] reported his death


Private Joseph Midgley seriously wounded in the back and legs. He died on the 13th, aged 22 [he would actually have been 31 years old].

Went to France after about three months training.

Lived at 2 Regent Street

 

The following week's Edition [31st August 1917] published his photograph.

He was buried at Étaples Military Cemetery, France [Grave Ref XXV M 1A].

He was a half-time piecer [1871] / a dyer's labourer [1881] / a labourer [1884] / a mechanic labourer [1891] / an iron labourer [1901] / an employee of Wood Brothers [1907].

In 1884, he married Mary Ellen Knowles [1864-1???] at Halifax Parish Church.


Mary Ellen was born in Greetland, the daughter of James Knowles, labourer

He was a member of Knowlwood Primitive Methodist Church / a picker maker at Fielden Holt & Sons.

In [Q3] 1914, he married Edith Wadsworth [1886-19??] in Todmorden.


Edith was born in Hebden Bridge, the daughter of Elijah Wadsworth
 

Child: Ronald [b 1916]

During World War I, he enlisted [May 1918] and served as a Private with the 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.

He was sent to France [11th September 1918].

He died 18th September 1918 (aged 32).

The Todmorden & District News [27th September 1918] reported his death


Private William Midgley, East Yorkshire Regiment. died of wounds in hospital in France at 4:30 pm on the 18th September, aged 32.

He left a wife and one child at 57 Knowlwood Road

 

The following week's Edition [4th October 1918] published his photograph.

He was buried at Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulencourt, France [Grave Ref A 3].

He is remembered in the Todmorden Garden of Remembrance.

In 1921, Edith was a fustian machinist for A. Crabtree, clothier, at Victoria Road, Hebden Bridge. She and Ronald were living at 37 Unity Street, Hebden Bridge, with her widowed father Elijah Wadsworth [b Heptonstall 1854], a fustian weaver for the Nutclough Fustian Co-operative Society, Hebden Bridge

Born in Bingley [3rd May 1830]; baptised at 15th August 1832.

He was a worsted spinner [1863] / a member of the Ovenden Local Board [1873].

In 1873, he was one of those who received anonymous death threats from Jonathan Priestley.

On 21st January 1863, he married (1) Hannah Isles at Halifax Parish Church.


Hannah was the daughter of William Isles
 

They had no children.

They lived at Holdsworth House [1872].

Hannah died in Ovenden [3rd November 1874].

She was buried at Illingworth Moor Wesleyan Chapel

On 4th December 1877, he married (2) Mary Ramsden [1837-1911] at St John's Church, Lytham.


Mary was born in Halifax, the daughter of Thomas Ramsden
 

Child: Irene Ramsden [1879-1957] who married John Sam Drabble

They lived at

Wilson died in Ovenden [24th February 1879].

He was buried at Illingworth Church [27th February 1879]. Probate records show that he left effects valued at £5,000.

The will was proved by his widow Mary & his brother Robert John Midgley.

During World War I, he served as a Private with the 15th Battalion Durham Light Infantry.

He died of pneumonia [24th March 1917] (aged 38).

He was buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty, France [Grave Ref VI E 1].

He is remembered in the Halifax Town Hall Books of Remembrance, on Bradshaw War Memorial, and on the Memorial at Illingworth Wesleyan Methodist Chapel
