The inquest recorded that – although he was sober – he had climbed on
the train when he found the carriage-doors locked, and had been
struck on the forehead by projecting stones on a low bridge.

The Leeds Times of 15th August 1853 reported
On Saturday [13th August 1853], Isaac Maude, of Greetland,
farmer, was charged by Mary Brooke, the wife of Joseph
Brooke, with having on Easter Monday, pulled a hook out of a wall
and let her clothes-line down; after which, for some whim or other,
he trampled upon the clothes.
In defence, he alleged that the line was hung across a fold over
which the public had right of road; but it was proved that the fold
is private property, and that defendant had done the act out of spite.
He was fined, penalty and costs 49/-
