Northgate House,, the administrative buildings for Calderdale MBC on Northgate, Halifax, were commissioned in 1974, when Calderdale Council was formed.
The buildings & the new Halifax Central Library, were designed by William Clarke, the Council's chief architect, They were opened by the Mayor of Halifax in April 1982.
In 1990, an ornamental water feature in front of the Council offices was filled-in to deter vandals.
In July 2008, it was announced that the Central Library facilities and Northgate House would be closed and the land sold for retail development. The Council were hoping that the space would be of interest to the Primark company, such were the fashion aspirations of the good burghers of Halifax.
The Council offices were to be moved into a refurbished Princess Buildings.
In October 2011, Calderdale Council's Cabinet voted to recommend that Northgate House and the Central Library and archives be disposed of and a new library and archives be moved to a site near Square Spire.
Work on the new Library began in 2015.
Like many Calderdale Council grand decisions, sale of the site for retail development did not happen, and it was decided to convert the whole site to a Sixth Form College. In 2018, the buildings were refurbished / redeveloped
