Joe Oates was described at the inquest as a Master Quarryman.
The quarry which adjoined his house was a small one, owned by him and
worked by himself, 3 sons and 2 labourers.
The death occurred due to a fall of shale whilst they were trying to
work a bed of stone.
Mr Oates was buried under 3 feet of shale and had a broken
back and two broken legs.
HM Factory Inspector said that this was one of the worst cases he had
known from personal risk and for the sake of the living it was time
that the regulations for those working in such places were more
strictly observed
