The Yorkshire Gazette [Saturday 5th October 1833] reported
the story
On Tuesday night, as Benjamin Pinder was returning from
Halifax to Brighouse, a young man fell in company with him on
Southowram Bank Top, with whom he walked to Brookfoot, when the
companion stopped upon some pretext, and Mr Pinder walked on.
He was, however, soon overtaken by three men, who seized him and
threw him on his back, and with other acts of violence tore away his
pockets.
Mr Pinder struggled hard though his hands were held, and was
quite sure of having marked one or more of his assailants.
This, and other circumstances, led to the apprehension of a man
named Mellor, living in Halifax, who on Monday was examined
before Christopher Rawson, and fully committed to Wakefield
House of Correction.
Another man name of Samuel Asquith was apprehended on
Wednesday and committed
