in Halifax, there is a large stone flag which was recently removed
from a farm in the possession of that gentleman at Hipperholme, on
account of its deriving a fictitious value from the following
circumstances.
It is said, on unquestionable authority, that Sir Robert Peel,
passed some of his early years at Hipperholme School, and moreover,
that once upon a time he exhibited his longing for immortality
by carving with his own hands on a block of stone which served the
humble office of fence post

On 12th April 1854, Peel was ill-treating a female with whom
he was drinking at the King of Prussia public house in
Halifax.
Both parties were the worse for liquor.
Jowett intervened, Peel struck him with a single
violent blow under the left ear, and he died before medical
assistance could be called.
Mr Lister, surgeon, examined the body.
There were no outward marks of violence but the head was covered in
blood which accounted for death.
At the Trial Peel was found Guilty, but recommended to
mercy, and imprisoned for 14 days
