Public Toilets

There used to be many of these in the district.

Since the 1990s, many have been converted to unisex pay-as-you-go facilities, whilst other have been closed, demolished or converted to other uses

Albion Street, Halifax

These were originally below ground and lower down Albion Street next to the Peacock.

In the 1950s, the underground facilities were replaced by one which joined those used by the market traders.

In the 1980s, the public facilities were replaced by unisex pay-as-you-go toilets. There is a photograph of the facilities

Baitings Reservoir, Rochdale Road

Bank Top, Southowram

There were male facilities on the east side of the road, set into a piece of waste ground opposite Bethesda Primitive Methodist Chapel

Billy Lane, Old Town, Hebden Bridge

Bradford Road, Northowram

Bramston Street, Brighouse

This closed in the early 2000s and was converted into a florist's shop

Brearley Lane, Brearley

Brook Street, Todmorden

In April 2009, this was recorded as top of the league of most-used public toilets in the district, with an average of 740 people using them every week [who counts these statistics?]

Brow Bridge, Rochdale Road, West Vale

The facilities by the car park here were converted into a hairdresser's shop. The site was formerly occupied by Brigg Royd Mill

Bull Green, Halifax

Two large facilities – male and female – were built when Bull Green was redeveloped. These were underground below the main terrace of Bull Green House.

These closed in the 1980s.

They were subsequently converted into WC's wine bar

Charlestown Road, Halifax

These were set into the wall, near the junction with North Bridge, on a balcony hanging precariously over North Bridge Railway Station. They were removed in the 1970s when Burdock Way was constructed

Clough Road, Norland

Stood opposite St Luke's Church

Cragg Vale, Mytholmroyd

Closed

Elland Bridge

Stood on Park Road near the Barge & Barrel and overlooking the Calder & Hebble Navigation there. Demolished

Ganny Road, Brighouse

George Square, Halifax

There used to be 2 – ladies' and gents' – below ground in the centre of the square. These were filled in and replaced by unisex pay-as-you-go toilets

The facilities – and bus shelter – occupied a small block at the northern end of the car park for the Dusty Miller pub. It closed in 199?. It was demolished and a small suite of offices built on the site

These were handy for visitors to Belle Vue Library. They were demolished when the library moved and Belle Vue House became a commercial property. There is a photograph of the facilities

The original facilities were hidden amongst the rockery at the south-west corner of the park.

In the 1980s, these were closed and modern facilities were built nearer the south entrance to the park.

The facilities stood at the junction of Oxford Lane, Cinderhills Lane and Jubilee Road, opposite Siddal Junior School. They closed in 19?? They were converted into a Café

Convenient for Halifax Bus Garage and for the Shay.

Wellholme Park, Brighouse

This was converted into a Café for visitors to the park

Westgate, Halifax

By the entrance to the Piece Hall. There is a photograph of the facilities

Whitehall Inn, Hipperholme

Facilities stood outside the Whitehall Inn, Hipperholme.

It is said that this was a popular venue for placing bets by leaving betting slips between the bricks in the walls of the building.
