He was a member of Foster Lane Wesleyan Chapel & School / a student of University College, Reading [1913-1915] / a teacher at Goldthorpe School, Rotherham.

During World War I, he enlisted [May 1916] and served as a Gunner with C Battery 83rd Brigade Royal Field Artillery.

He died 10th August 1917 (aged 23).

He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium [Grave Ref 5 & 9], and on the Memorial at Hebden Bridge United District Secondary School.

His brother Gerald also died in the War

On 9th February 1879, he married Mary Kenyon [1857-1916] at Halifax Parish Church.

Of Halifax.

In June 1849, an Eli Rothwell was fined £1 for an assault upon George Stocks.

The Halifax Guardian of 2nd June 1849 reported the incident


Ely Rothwell of Halifax, was charged with assaulting George Stocks of Laver Hill, Farmer, on Sunday morning in a most unprovoked manner, throttling him in such a manner as to bring blood. He did not know the man but watched him and others trail hunting (on Sunday morning) until he got his son to identify him. In defence, Rothwell admitted the assault, and called a witness named Wilson to prove that Stocks had challenged him to fight. Stocks had no witness of the assault, but his son proved that Rothwell had admitted to "Only just taking him by the throat". He had £1 to pay; which he instantly "forked out" in a most imprudent manner
 

On 5th June 1849, an Eli Rothwell was fined £3 for an assault upon William Buckley, a game watcher at Scar Wood, Halifax

He was a member of Foster Lane Wesleyan Chapel & School / a member of Salem Wesleyan Chapel, Hebden Bridge / educated at Hebden Bridge Central Elementary School, and Heath  Grammar School / a student at teaching college [1911] / a student at Reading University College / a member of the College Officer's Training Corps / a teacher at Mytholmroyd Council School / a teacher at Worsborough Dale, Barnsley / headmaster at Stubbings Evening School / a student of agriculture at Garforth and at Leeds University / a member of Caldene Hockey Club / a member of Hebden Bridge Liberal Club.

During World War I, he enlisted [January 1915] and served as a Rifleman / Lance Corporal with the 8th Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps.

He was killed in action [15th September 1916] (aged 24).

The Halifax Courier [30th September 1916] reported his death with a photograph.

He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial, France [Grave Ref 13A & 13B].

He is remembered on the Memorial at Heath Grammar School, and on the Memorial at Hebden Bridge Methodist Church.
